Swapping engine and Gearbox

Beitrag von STFenFrance » 24.03.2009, 23:40

Hallo,

My S80 got a 5 speed gearbox, as i'm leaving in a mountain area a 2x4 would be better, i may got one; this change would be a little bit better, a far more efficient solution would be to change engine + gearbox for a more powerfull one, i could find a 170 cv turbo engine for a cool price (Renault, sorry.. )
But do the 2x4 is strong enough to deal with the new engine ? Or do i need to find another gearbox that is usually mounted with this engine ?
And what about the other parts of the kinematic chain ? Do the axle will be OK ? the rest of the transmission parts ? ..

Any advice is welcome

Thank you in advance

Hi there,

some of the s80's have already changed to an different engine, mostly a mercedes 170hp six-in-a-row.
the gearbox S 8-45 from zf can handle the torque of these engines quite well, the most of these vehiclese are not used in heavy conditions or extensive mileages.
It could be a problem to adapt the gearbox to the motor, i dont know the renault engine.
It would be easier to keep the gearbox which belongs to that enginge, the propshaft should be adaptet easy.

regards

Thank you very much for your answer, the Renault engine is because it could be easy for me to find one for a cool price.
But it's obvious that it would probably not fit with the original propshaft, the idea was to change the whole system, but if a 170cv engine could fit to the ZF 8.45, it's the same (I already want/need to change the GB. ) but I can do it in 2 parts: First the GB and after a while the engine, i'm sure my bank account will approve this way
Would you have any ref for a fitting engine ?

Many thanks

The most conversions I know are with mercedes engines, which are quite common and not so expensive when they are used.
even there its necessary to adapt the engine to the gearbox. But there its already known, and the clutch disk has to bechanged too, because the pin is different.
SO if you buy an used engine, sometimes you can get the gearbox as well pretty cheap and the unit can stay together.

And back to the starting point ..
I'm going look for some engine + gb, and compare the prices.

Thank you
